7 Smart tips to a Seriously Organised Separation

Because it is important for you to be practical when separating, I found that these seven smart tips really helped my family law clients keep focused and organised:

Tip #1
Take the time to gather your important documents. This step is important so think it out carefully. What might you need? Here are some ideas to get you thinking – marriage certificate, birth certificate, baptism certificate, last 3 years’ tax returns, passport, bank statements, insurance documents, resume, car registration, pay slips, etc.

Tip #2
Make a list of the household items that you both have. Don’t forget items in storage, in the garage, the shed or under the bed.

Tip #3
Start a diary or journal. You will have enough going on so this is a really great way to remember events or dates that may be important. Eg. Date of separation, who had the children and when and what activities you may have paid for.

Tip #4
Don’t listen to everyone else’s advice. Whilst family and friends mean well, you should get legal advice from a lawyer if you need it. It is an emotional and stressful time so it’s a good idea to get the correct advice you will need, even if sometimes you might not like it.

Tip #5
Try and work out an agreement between yourselves as soon as possible. The sooner the better really. Don’t let things fester and become bigger issues than what they need to be. Take responsibility and control of the situation, it will help you out in the long run.

Tip #6
Don’t forget to let the bank know that you have separated. Talk to your bank manager or customer service person and tell them that you have separated. This way authorities on bank accounts can be checked and updated.

Tip #7
Become informed. You might not need or want to engage a lawyer through your separation process, however, even if you have the time to make a one-off appointment for initial advice, the information you receive can help guide you into making better decisions for yourself during this important time in your life.

Because everyone’s situation is different, each initial consultation with me is tailored to suit your circumstances. I will make sure it is relevant and informative for you. Get in touch today to make your appointment and receive a bonus complimentary pack that I will put together just for you.

Rest assured that at your initial consultation we will consider options for progressing your matter, whether you engage me further or whether you prefer to manage your legal matter yourself.
